New data proves Facebook's extensive reach in Morocco
For many in Morocco, it seems that Facebook is the most popular destination on the internet.
A healthy 73% of the total population visited Facebook in
November 2013, compared to 70% who visited Google and 63% who
visited YouTube, according to recent data from Ipsos
division Gemius SA.
Twitter has yet to become go-to social network in Morocco, however;
it ranks as the 14th most popular social network,
with only 13% of the population paying a visit.
Men and women have different browsing patterns, according to the
statistics. Moroccan men prefer Google, then Facebook, then
YouTube, while women visit Facebook first, then Google, then
YouTube. Despite the different ordering, the lists are largely the
same.
This isn't just unique to Morocco; it's a region-wide trend.
Data on Alexa Internet, a subsidiary company of Amazon.com which
provides commercial web traffic data, shows
similar rankings for many countries in the Arab region;
Facebook is ranked the most visited site in Lebanon, Jordan, Libya,
and Algeria.
However, in much of the developed world- and Saudi Arabia, it seems
that open systems- as opposed to Facebook's closed web- appear to
be winning. In Saudi, Google, YouTube and Facebook are the most
popular sites, while in the US, UK, and France, Google,
Facebook, then YouTube take the day.
